READ BOOKS TO RIDE COASTERS!

New for the 2018-2019 school year, Silverwood will no longer be using the Reading is the Ticketยฎ program, but will offer a reading program that we will manage in-house. Silverwood Read 2 Ride is a recreational reading program for teachers to use with students in grades Pre K to 6. The program is designed to encourage students to read for fun. Studies show that after children learn how to read, the actual time they spend reading declines steadily in successive grades. Also, as technology provides more and more distractions, it has become even harder to get young people to just sit down with a good book.

Silverwoodโ€™s Read 2 Ride program provides a themed unit, plus the wonderful incentive of a ticket to Silverwood Theme Park, to get your students excited about reading. Getting kids to read for fun, not just for assignments, is an all-important literacy goal. The Read 2 Ride program is meant to motivate your students to read and to establish a lifelong love of reading.

There are two major components to Read 2 Ride:

1. The Reading Resource Guide
This resource guide is filled with reproducible activities and other learning materials to encourage your students to read in a broad context area. The theme of this yearโ€™s program is "Funny Fables."
2. The Read 2 Ride Challenge

The Read 2 Ride Challenge is an incentive component that allows all children who read for fun to be winners. Students who read for at least ten hours during the contest period will receive a free ticket to Silverwood Theme Park.
Deadline to sign up for the 2018-2019 school year is November 21st.
Program available in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.

3. Start the Challenge

Start your students reading and keep track of what theyโ€™re reading.ย  Make sure your students know they need to write down every time they read, and that a parent needs to initial each entry on the tally sheet to verify that the reading was completed. Accuracy is important in case we need to verify a studentโ€™s participation in the Challenge.
4. Set Dates

Set your dates for the reading period.ย  The Read 2 Ride Challenge is designed to fit with your schoolโ€™s schedule. You can start as soon you receive program materials in November 2018 and end whenever you choose, as long as you send your forms in by the deadline.
5. Tally them up

Each teacher should collect his/her studentsโ€™ Tally sheets and verify that each student has done 10 hours (thatโ€™s 600 minutes!) of reading. Make copies of the Teacherโ€™s Roster for each teacher participating in the Challenge. Each teacher should then fill out the Teacherโ€™s Roster for the students in his/her class who have completed at least 600 minutes of recreational reading.
1. Choose a Coordinator

This person can be a teacher, a librarian, a parent volunteer, or anyone else you choose. He or she will be the point person for the Silverwood Read 2 Ride Challenge in your school and will be responsible for sending in the entries for all the teachers and classes in your school.

2. Distribute Information to Students

Distribute copies of the "Dear Family" letter, the Park information sheet, and the Student Tally sheets to students.ย  Ask your students to take this information home and share it with their parents and/or other responsible adults. The letter explains the Read 2 Ride Challenge. The Student Tally sheet provides space for students to write down the names of the books they read and how long they spend reading.
6. Turn them in

Teachers should turn their signed Teacherโ€™s Roster sheets and all Student Tally sheets into your schoolโ€™s Silverwood Read 2 Ride Challenge Coordinator. The Challenge Coordinator should collect all the rosters and tally sheets, fill out the Ticket Request Form, and make copies of the rosters and Ticket Request Forms for your records.
7. Send them in

Mail all the Teacherโ€™s Roster sheets and student tally sheets along with one Ticket Request Form per school, in one large envelope to:

Silverwood Theme Park
Attn: Silverwood Read 2 Ride
27843 N Hwy 95
Athol, ID 83801

All forms must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, March 6th, 2019.
7. Have Some Fun!

Once we receive your forms, we will send you a packet including a free admission ticket to Silverwood Theme Park for every student on the Roster (that is, every student that completed his/her 600 minutes of reading). Weโ€™ll also send one free adult admission ticket for every 15 children in your school who are awarded a free ticket; Plus one for the Challenge Coordinator, too.
Deadline to sign up for the 2018-2019 school year is November 21st. Program available in Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington.
